Environmental defenders: Past environmental controversies and insights for the future

Raewyn holds the degrees of Bachelor of Social Science, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Laws and Masters of Commerce and heads EDS’s highly-regarded environmental policy think tank. Raewyn has published widely on resource management issues including major books on coastal development, dolphin protection, the environmental history of the Hauraki Gulf, and the history of EDS. She has recently overseen EDS investigations into the resource management system, the conservation management system, climate adaptation and oceans reform.

Raewyn was a member of the Ministerially-appointed Resource Management Review Panel which led a comprehensive review of the resource management system and the Ministerial Advisory Committee tasked with progressing the recommendations in the Sea Change Tai Timu Tai Pari marine spatial plan for the Hauraki Gulf. She is currently a member of the Hauraki Gulf Fisheries Plan Advisory Group. In 2019, she became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to environmental and conservation policy. In 2023, Raewyn was the winner of the Resource Management Law Association Outstanding Person Award for outstanding research and publications on critical environmental law and policy issues in Aotearoa New Zealand.
