Gareth holds a Bachelor of Resource & Environmental Planning (Hons) from Massey University, alongside a Diploma in Local & State Government from the Kennedy Business School (Harvard University). Gareth has worked in three local authorities (Whangarei, New Plymouth and Taupo), and the Department of Conservation in various planning, management and leadership roles. Most recently Gareth was the Chief Executive Officer of the Taupo District Council for eight years, before returning to the New Plymouth District Council as its Chief Executive in March last year.

Gareth is passionate about creating teams that are efficient, responsive, and will always try and “do the right thing”. He is driven by an ethos of public service, and a desire to be a part of building great places and communities.
